Plane tickets and backpacks

Nothing booked, nothing planed except a couple plane tickets to south east Asia, One backpack each and three months of free time. Our adventure started off with a long 14 hour flight from Toronto YYZ to Shanghai China. Very dry airplane air and people sneaking cigarettes in the bathroom did not help our colds. We intentionally booked a 13 hour layover thinking we will go check out Shanghai while we are there because well, why not. That didn’t end up going as planned because we were both feeling pretty sick, and we were prepared for warm weather wearing nothing more then a thin sweater, but Shanghai was freezing from the minute we stepped off the plane. So we decided to get a hotel to rest up for the second leg of our journey. We made a mistake by getting a hotel from the airport, we knew it would be a rip off but after talking the guy down from $120 USD to $85 USD we thought okay can’t be that big of a rip off. When he gave us the credit machine he then tried twice to make us over pay, we stood our ground and said no this is not right fix the price. So we ended up paying $85 USD for what looked in the photos a nice 4 star room with a free shuttle there and back, wifi and breakfast. We arrived at the hotel and during the check in process a Chinese lady in her broken English said how much did you pay, we showedHer the receipt, she said “oh to much”. We over paid by 178 Chinese dollar which Is roughly $25 USD. We tried to get a refund at the hotel but the language barrier declined that option. No one in China spoke a sliver of English which was not a problem as it is a foreign language, The problem was not having any local currency. We tried fighting the language barrier again to get food at the restaurant and some water, they did not except USD or Credit card so we were stuck with our strategically packed clif (protein) bars! The room was freezing and we didn’t understand the Chinese lettering on the thermos stat, after pressing many buttons many times we gave up and had a hot shower to get our money’s worth! On our 6am shuttle back to the airport believe it or not we met a 28 year old Canadian male named Mike who lived and worked in China for the past 5 years and was from the same small town out side of Toronto, Aurora Ontario! I was mind blown by this small world coincidence. We found out from him that we got really ripped off for the hotel and so did the lady we checked in with, he had paid $60 USD. His suggestion was specially in China use one of many hotel apps or go directly to the hotel for a rate, the Chinese will juice you if they see the opportunity. We Checked into our flight to Bangkok made sure to try some udon noodles before we left and set out into the sky to our next destination Bangkok Thailand!
