Paradise…? Is that you ?
Koh Lipe, Sutun, Thailand.
Is this place real? Have we found our second home ?
This tropical paradise is located on the west side of Thailand in the Adamen sea, far south nearing the boarder of maylasia. Koh Lipe is part of a collection of islands that are labeled national parks.
It’s a small little island, there are a few roads but the whole island is within walkable distance. The coast of the island is filled with beautiful beaches and amazing coral reefs that are not to far out making it possible to snorkel to them. The inside of the island is a developed tourist hub on one side and a tropical jungle on the other. Pattya beach is the main tourist arrival area, beautiful beach but filled with boats and people. Just off that beach is walking street, filled with awesome seafood restaurants, shops and bars with a bumping night life.
We stayed on the other side of the island which we found to be the perfect location, close to the quite white sand beaches, remote bungalow in the jungle but only a 10 min walk to the happening walking street.
The best resort on the island is Smile bungalows, not only for the location but for the people, we have made some great friends here. The owners and workers of this resort are the most welcoming genuine Thai people. Clean, beautiful large bungalows, secluded location, and a nice restaurant with amazing food. We lived here for 7 weeks and wouldn’t want to be anywhere els on the island. Located right in between sunrise and sunset beach we had the best quitest beaches on the island just a stones throw away. I have to get back to the food, the food at smile restaurant is the best… maybe the best Thai food We have had. The pad Thai is to die for, fried noodles are incredible. All these dishes come with chicken, pork, squid or fish and you get a huge serving of proteins. Almost every night during our 7 week stay the owners had a BBQ, we don’t eat meat only fish so we often had a fish dinner here. OMG… incredible, “a tuna like fish” is how it was served to me. It was marinated in something amazingly tasteful, and it was only 150 baht !!! Anywhere els on the island it’s easily 300-400 for a BBQ fish!! Bottom line stay at Smile Resort, the perfect location, with the right price and the best food !!
We miss our new friends at smile resort and down at the tattoo shop so much already, we will defiantly be visiting them more in the next few years.
Koh Lipe island is one of our favourites, it was so hard to leave, in fact after 2 weeks we left to Malaysia and returned after only 2 days. We lived on Lipe for 7 weeks and it just felt right, the perfect mix of nothing going on and lots happening. We worked on the patio of our bungalow in the morning, beached the afternoon away and hit up walking street for dinner then finished off at the reggae bar with some friends.
Koh Lipe island should be on everyone’s list, it is expensive for a Thai island but for good reason. It’s a great way to migrate from Thailand to Malaysia, hop on a boat for 750 baht and an hour and a half later your in Langkawi, Malaysia.
